The art of inspiration and influence when it comes to photography happens when there exists real talent and a magical moment (timing, mood, lighting, composition). Jim Marshall had an atavistic knowledge of that moment and how to capture the soul of the person and deliver that beautiful moment to his audience. On March 23, 2010 we sadly lost this legend of Rock & Roll photography.

#RIPBIG… Absolutely! But… way before twitter trending topics… this game was a lot different. There was a real feeling of building something that was uniquely ours! People wanted each other to win, there was a different spirit in the industry. It somehow meant a lot more in 1995, especially in New York City when Big held the crown. I remember the thick air outside of Bad Boy on 19th street and 5th avenue, music blaring out of the maroon Land Cruiser or Benz, people milling around waiting to hit the clubs, puttin’ it in the air, it was a great moment in history. The movie “Notorious” touched on it a bit, but it was always grimier, less polished and had a real presence. When Big was around you, you knew you were in the presence of greatness. If you haven’t picked up a copy of RESPECT Magazine yet, you must not be a card carrying member of the hip hop generation.  For those who don’t know, RESPECT Magazine,  is an amazing, and rare, blend of equal appreciation for both the music itself and the amazing photographers who’ve shaped the way we look at hip hop.

Photo edited by the insanely talented Sally Berman, this magazine doesn’t focus on the tabloid gossip of hip hop, but the amazing blend of artists that come together to make this culture something to cherish.  Hip hop isn’t dead y’all, its alive and kicking on the pages of RESPECT.

Recently the magazine partnered up with K-SWISS and asked 4 legendary photographers to define the meaning of the word “Classic”  through self-portrait, video and written word.  Check out a bit of the campaign here, and for even more go pick up a copy of RESPECT Magazine currently on stands now.
