ARCHIVE FOR Gallery Exhibitions

In conjunction with The Sapporo Beer promo event, the renowned Hollywood Obsessions Gallery famous for its portraits of Hollywood greats, held its first ever hip-hop exhibition displaying the works of photographer Jonathan Mannion.

The gallery is most famous for iconic images of people like Marilyn Monroe and Fred Astaire and can now be credited for displaying artwork of Run DMC and Outkast.

During the run up to the MTV Awards, which was also taking place the same week, a few A-listers who were in town for the awards passed through the show including MTV’s Sway who posed for photos.

The exclusive invite only trade show event, which debuted its first ever show in August 2007, took place during the week of the famous Magic Convention. The event showcased 23 top street wear brands in the business including: Crooks n Castles, Ssurilla, La Carrera, Dizzisit, The Coka Nostra and Diamond Supply Co. among many others.

Synonymous with their penchant for music photography Govinda Gallery has exhibited work from some of the world’s most famous photographers including Mick Rock who’s most recognized for his photographic work of David Bowie, rocktographer Daniel Kramer for his famous shot of Bob Dylan in 1967 and Joel Brodsky who shot Jim Morrison of The Doors - you know, the bare chest shot with the 70’s style shaggy hair and arms outstretched like an angel.

Among these famed photographers, hip-hop photographer, Jonathan Mannion was invited to exhibit his extensive photographic portraits of hip-hop greats in the first ever solo exhibit held at the D.C. gallery.

“It was a great night for all involved,” said the legendary MC Serch who made a special appearance. “The exhibition pushed the boundaries of urban music.”

For over thirty years Govinda is the first venue in the US to organize exhibitions of fine photographs that have documented contemporary music, way before the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame or anyone else, and for hip-hop to now be included in the mix is a great look.
